About the book.
I believe knowing God is the greatest gift this world has tooffer. But to know him, we have to consistently be with him. Being with Jesus is what brings colour to the mundane and engages our hearts with the spirit of God so we become increasingly christlike. Helen Keller was right, when our eyes are turned to Jesus we discover everything this world has to offer dims in comparison to him.
During 2020, whilst figuring out how to lead a youth ministry in a pandemic and mute teenagers on zoom, I started asking big questions around what really matters when seeking to follow the way of Jesus. I made a statement one night quite spontaneously to a screen full of youth, “I think If we can devote ourselves to
these two things: allowing people who are further on than us to speak into our life and develop a private pursuit of God, we will thrive in all seasons of life.”
After that I felt inspired to Invite a small group of 16-18 year
olds to meet each week (virtually) before school. We gathered at 8am to discuss why a personal and private pursuit of God was so important. Shockingly they showed up, sometimes in pyjamas, and I shared things about prayer that have deeply impacted me along
the way. We asked each other questions, wrestled with it practically and looked closely at the scriptures.
After that I began to dream, and wonder about writing something
that would help others begin to engage more with prayer. I wanted to remove the obscurity I'd often experienced and inspire people with practical ways to actually start doing it.
Because In Mark chapter 3, on a mountainside, Jesus began discipling12 men that would go on to change the world. But first he asked them to commit to being with him.
I wrote and recorded a 4 track EP called “prayers from the mountain”
which is a collection of poems I released later that year. Then I set out to write this book, seeking to wipe away some of the complexity and confusion surrounding prayer. I hope more than anything this honest guide directs you back to a life devoted to being
with Jesus.
